Richard Clegg is a registered patent attorney in San Diego,
California, with 22 years of high level experience in all areas of intellectual property ("IP") law, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, unfair competition and related transactional work and client counseling. He works with clients to help them develop and protect their own IP rights, and to avoid or challenge third-party IP rights. He also represents clients in civil matters that do not involve IP law, including complex business transactions and business litigation.
Richard is an experienced trial attorney. As a former partner in two major law firms, and now as a solo practitioner, he has been lead counsel in more than 50 complex IP cases in federal and state courts. He has tried cases to judges, juries and administrative tribunals, and has argued appeals to various federal appellate courts, including the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C. He regularly serves as local counsel for out-of-town law firms that are handling patent infringement cases and other cases in the U.S. District Court in San Diego. He also represents clients in adversarial proceedings in the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, including patent reexaminations and trademark opposition/cancellation proceedings.
In addition to his litigation experience, Richard spent several years as in-house IP counsel for an engineering services company with 50,000 employees, and has substantial experience negotiating and preparing complex IP and technology-related agreements.
